Relationship-Focused Psychological Counseling
I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in identifying obstacles that get in the way of your ability to find and maintain fulfilling relationships. I provide research-backed effective tools that can help you accomplish desired changes.
Whether you are single or partnered, problematic relationships (or lack of relationships) are among the most common reasons that people seek counseling and psychotherapy. Relational issues can lead to or be accompanied by depression, anxiety, anger, compulsive and impulsive behavior, loss of work productivity and physical ailments. I will work with you to establish clear, specific, desired changes that can help you feel better and live a more fulfilling, well-balanced life.
Individual Counseling
When working with you individually to help improve your relationships, I start with your relationship with yourself. I learn a bit about your family history, cultural background and personality features to get a better understanding of what motivates you, your beliefs and values, how you cope with stress and how you protect yourself. We collaborate on specific, doable, tangible goals and I will offer you practical tools for efficient, effective, lasting change. Some typical challenges for individuals are:
- Communicating thoughts and feelings assertively
- Building or re-building trust
- Choosing a potential partner wisely
- Recovering from divorce
- Becoming more successful at dating
- Making decisions about sex that you don't regret
- Clarifying and feeling good about your sexual identity and orientation
- Breaking a pattern of choosing partners who treat you badly
- Learning how to identify, access and modulate your emotions
- Overcoming being too distant, too smothering, too controlling or too needy
- Improving confidence and self-esteem
- Managing conflicting relationship values such as wanting autonomy and wanting connection
Couples Counseling
Couples go through developmental stages just as individuals do. When working with couples I will learn about you both as individuals, and then also learn about the relationship as a dynamic work in progress. Some typical challenges for couples are:
- Managing conflicts better
- Balancing power in the relationship equitably
- Maintaining an intact sense of self while loving your partner
- Balancing the commitments of career, relationship and family
- Communicating thoughts and feelings assertively
- Overcoming breaches of trust
- Moving from anger to compassion
- Maintaining a satisfying sex life
- Increasing empathy for your partner
Structure of Sessions and Fees
Sessions are 50 to 80 minutes long, depending on needs. I accept payment at the time of service and am also a preferred provider in the Premera Blue Cross network. Other insurers may also reimburse a significant portion of fees. Please check directly with your provider to find out exactly what your in-network and out-of-network benefits will be for outpatient mental health, based on your group plan. I would be happy to discuss my fees and current availability for sessions. Please call
